Introductory lecture to a course of lectures on surgical anatomy and the operations of surgery, 1852.

Mott's notebook, written by him during the summer of 1852, was used for teaching upon his return to the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Contains lectures on surgical anatomy and the operations of surgery. Notebook has 1 page containing a Christmas card scene, 1 photograph of a teenage girl, and 1 photograph of a dog; 3 pages contain small religious cards; 1 page contains a poem; 1 page contains a small colored drawing of an Indian.

Valentine Mott was an American surgeon and medical professor in New York City. He graduated from Columbia College, where he later became a professor of surgery; he also had a very successful private practice. He spent 1834-1841 in Europe. Upon returning to New York he joined the faculty of the new medical department of the University of the City of New York, now the New York University School of Medicine.
